Maintenance – Wood is a natural biodegradable material that must be treated to withstand the British climate. It is recommended to treat the external face of the
Log Cabin (after construction is complete) with a wood preservative such as
Cuprinol, thereafter it can be stained or oiled whichever is preferred. The timber can also be painted using the appropriate external wood paint.
Planning applications – In most situations planning for a small Log
Cabin is not required. There are big differences between local authorities when it comes to granting building applications, both in terms of what is approved and in the time taken to respond to an application. For this reason always check with the planning department at your local town hall before building.

Foundations
Concrete pillars
The cabins need a strong and steady foundation. We recommend a simple concrete plinth system, which can be put in place for you. A plinth diagram will be provided to you a week after an order has been placed.
Treated foundation system
Our Log Cabins comes with a treated sub floor system that will keep the rest of the cabin in place, this system is made of tanalized timbers and should be screwed together with the supplied coach screws.
Treatment of logs
The logs are naturally resistant to fungi and insects, but as the weather in the UK differs from the weather in Sweden some further protection is recommended. Simply by applying oil or a chemical such as Cuprinol to the external walls to the cabin we can safely say that the cabin will survive even the most hardened attack from any wood-deteriorating element.
Our personal preference is to apply Cuprinol to the external face logs then stain them, to the inside face apply either an oil such as “Danish oil” or leave them untreated for that fresh natural wood scent.
Any treatment that you give to your cabin will have to be reapplied every five years or so. If you use a wood paint, reapply in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.
Windows & doors
Treatment
Our windows are Vac-Vac treated twice to ensure that they are resistant to insect and fungi attack and then painted. The windows will never aging need to be chemically treated to withstand insects and fungi but the paint will slowly rub off over the years and hence they will need to be repainted from time to time. The simplest way to tell if a window needs to be repainted is to see if you can spot the timber underneath the paint. If you can, then it is time to give the window a new coat of paint.
Our windows should last for about 12 years with their existing paint.
Internal ceiling
We have a selection of wood types for the ceiling of your cabin, from simple slated wood to an exclusive pearl effect. See pictures below.
There are three main ceiling layouts the choice of which may influence the choice of timber for the ceiling:
Flat, this is the simplest ceiling type but the quickest when it comes to speed of erection, this system is also the most effective at covering extra insulation (if needed) and integrated down lights. Picture
Partially Vaulted, by far the most popular ceiling. This system can take integrated down lights at a 45-degree angle plus have them in the flat part. Picture
Fully Vaulted, this system will, in most cases, need a glue lam beam to support the roof rafters, we recommend this system mainly for larger log cabins with a partial loft space. Picture
Insulation
Floor
We can supply 200mm insulation for the floor cavities to ensure that your cabin floor will be as warm and comfortable as possible.
Wall
Our logs are naturally insulating but a wall mounted insulation system can be added if required. Extra wall insulation is only required for log cabins that are to be used as a residence or for occupation in sub zero temperatures.
Roof
The most important part of heat retention has not been left to chance, we can supply 200mm of insulation for the roof void as well.
Windows
All our windows are triple glazed to ensure that heat loss is at its minimum, however this is subject to design.
Roof
We recommend and supply as standard a two layer felt system. The first layer is the underlay paper that should be bonded / stapled to the roof. The second layer is an Icopal tile roof felt system that gives that traditional look and feel whilst being the absolute latest technologically superior material.
